Hi from Vicky! I copied some information from the SPCA web page, about volunteers. Volunteer Positions for British Columbia SPCA We call them volunteers, but to the staff, and the animals, they are heroes. Wherever they serve, volunteers are a highly valued resource to our Society. Volunteer opportunities vary at BC SPCA shelters. However, the following provide you with possible positions available (titles and job descriptions may vary): Animal Socialization - volunteers help the animals feel more comfortable at the shelter by interacting with them through play, grooming, and conversation. Generally provide love until permanent adopters can be found. This is an important job to help socialize the animal and therefore increase their chances of becoming adopted. Community Outreach - volunteers are needed for a variety of events and fundraising functions such as, bingo, fairs, mall displays and other community events where the SPCA promotes animal welfare. Dog Walkers - SPCA Shelters are constantly in need of dog walkers to help take care of the dogs and give them some much needed (and looked-forward-to!) exercise outside of their kennels. It doesn't take a lot of time, the exercise is great, and the rewards are endless! Event Volunteers - the SPCA offers many events to help fundraise for the Society and promote animal welfare such as walkathons, adoptathons, open houses, and more. Volunteers are always needed to help organize and run the event. Foster Family - provide a temporary home (perhaps for 3 - 4 weeks) for animals waiting to be adopted. Not all SPCA shelters offer a foster program, some do so for animals that need extra care like puppies, kittens, or animals recovering from an illness. Front Desk Helpers - assist potential adopters by greeting them, providing shelter directions, and in some cases assist on the phone. Humane Educator - teach children about pet care through empathy building and dog bite safety by providing 45 minute presentations for school and guide groups. At some shelters humane educator volunteers help out with animal clubs and summer camps. Kennel Cleaning - volunteers clean out and set up cat cages and dog kennels for our animal guests. Office/Clerical - assist with photocopying, filing, data entry work, mail outs, adoption-follow up, and more as required. Varied Skills - many projects at the SPCA would benefit from volunteers with skills in photography, writing, desktop publishing, illustration, and more. Find out how your creative skills can help. Becoming a volunteer is easy. However, all volunteers are screened appropriate to the position for which they apply. Why not call your local branch today to find out about volunteer opportunities? I visited some of the pounds in Taipei, but of course, as I can't read Chinese, I don't know if perhaps these programs are offered in your Taiwan pounds. I understand that you have an organization called the SPCA, but I believe that your SPCA does not run shelters. Am I correct? I don't know. from Vicky |
