Hi! It has been one year since I arrived in Taiwan. Below, I copied something off of the SPCA web page, for you. Under the current criminal code of Canada, the maximum penalties for someone who is found guilty of cruelty to animals are: 6 months in jail; $2000 fine; Note: In Taiwan $ this is: $40,000 Of those charges laid, only about 45% result in successful convictions. Frequently a successful conviction means a fine of $400 ($8,000 Twn) or simply being placed on probation. The animal cruelty provisions of the Criminal Code date to 1892, with minor amendments in 1953. Over the past century, societal attitudes towards animals have changed. Studies in recent years have shown a link between animal abuse and violence towards humans. Serial killers such as Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer tortured animals when they were young. Note: These men killed many, many people. The SPCA is trying to make animal cruelty punishment more severe. Bye for now, from Vicky |
